How to speed-read a PDF without losing comprehension

Reading faster is useful only when you still understand what matters. Treat speed as an adjustable tool, not a score.

Preview the document first

Look at the title, headings, summary and page count. Decide whether you need close understanding, a broad overview or just a particular fact. A legal agreement and a familiar newsletter should not be read at the same pace.

Begin near your normal pace

Start at a comfortable speed for one or two minutes. Increase it in small steps until the text begins to feel hurried, then step back slightly. Dense technical writing, unfamiliar names and equations usually need a slower pace than ordinary prose.

Use punctuation as breathing room

A short pause after commas and a longer pause after full stops helps preserve sentence structure. Pace Reader lets you adjust these pauses separately, so the rhythm can remain natural even at a higher word rate.

Keep the original page available

Finish with a quick recall check

At the end of a section, pause and name its main point without looking. If the idea is clear, continue. If not, revisit the paragraph rather than pushing ahead at the same speed.
